Fresh Produce: Fox Rampage Pro Carbon Full Face Lid
First things first, we don’t reckon anyone can deny that this latest Fox lid is one of the best looking full face helmets that’s ever been made. We just love it from every angle. Of course once it’s on your head it’s only other people who are going to be able to see how good it looks, and you’ll be more concerned with how it feels to wear. And the very short answer to that is best summed up by the first thing that Josh Bryceland said to me about it…”fucking well comfy”. I couldn’t have put it better myself.
From the outset Fox were determined to make the most comfortable full face that has ever been made, and I reckon they’ve succeeded. We reckon their previous V3R lid held that title, but this one manages to go one step further whilst still retaining a ‘moto’ feel, and it’s also slimmer and generally less bulky. Comfort isn’t just down to padding though and Fox are aware of that too and so they’ve fitted no fewer than 17 vents, including a pile of big ones on the chin guard to aid breathing. You also get a wicking and vented liner and they’ve made the range of peripheral vision as wide as possible. Of course weight also plays a big part and thanks to the use of a full carbon shell the large one that we have in our hands weighs just 1174g. Yes that’s a fair bit off being the lightest around but crucially this one feels incredibly solid and that weight is easily low enough to avoid any of that wobbling feeling.
As I said just now this lid really does have a reassuring feel to it, so much so that this is the first MTB lid that Bryceland has felt comfortable wearing. Previously he’s always insisted on wearing a moto lid. The traditional double D-ring closure again helps give a feeling of utmost protection.
You also get a serious feeling of quality when you pick this lid up and then put it on, but then again you’d expect that from a lid that’s carrying a premium price tag. We really like some of the little details too, particularly the visor. As you’d expect this is adjustable (and is fixed in place with some high quality aluminium screws), but it’s really designed to be used in its most raised position where it neatly buts up against a shoulder in the helmet shell. It gives an amazing seamless look and we reckon it plays a big part in helping this lid look as good as it does.
If you hadn’t already guessed we like this lid a lot, and above you can see the full range of colours that it’s going to be available in. There will also be five sizes to choose from in order to get the perfect fit, and Fox haven’t cheated by just using different thickness padding as there are actually two different shell sizes and three different liners. It’s not the cheapest way to do things but it’s the best way. Hopefully this lid should be available to buy pretty soon, and for those of you looking for a slightly more affordable option it sounds as though a cheaper composite version is in the pipeline.

Great looking lid, but what about its safety??
Know where have you mentioned what its made/constructed off or how its any safer than a £60 lid. Its not all about how cool you look.
True, couple months ago you released a video about how most helmets aren’t safe. Now you say “it really does have a reassuring feel to it”.
I read about its 17 vents everywhere else on the Internet, NOBODY says anything about some sort of certification.
@Chris and @James you’re clearly mad, its one of the nicest looking helmets ever made that looks good from every angle, who cares about safety, especially as its as fucking well comfy as this
treeehuggergraeme.
“its one of the nicest looking helmets ever made that looks good from every angle, who cares about safety”
Good luck with your nice looking helmet in hospital then! Frankly thats a stupid thing to say, who cares about safety! you’ve only got one head mate and it doesnt take much to smash it. But if your helmet looks cool then fair enough, you’ll look cool in the hospital too.
Personally I really like the new fox, I wanted to buy one, but ended up with a kali carbon avatar instead. Companies like Kali and Poc actually tell us how their helmet is deigned and built to do the job its made for. Protecting our heads in that one off crash when it counts.
I’m just saying it would be good to hear what Fox have done rather than just ” oh it looks good”
I guess your ‘sarcasm detector’ is broken at the moment then
“The Rampage Pro Carbon passes current ATSM 1592 and also the new Australian standards” says pinkbike… not sure what that means but I suppose it means its certified?
All helmets on sale have to pass safety tests, and to be honest those tests mean very little as they’re largely irrelevant for the kind of riding that we do. What I mean by that is that they are far too easy to pass.
The reason why we don’t really say that much about the safety of this lid compared to others is that without a testing laboratory it is impossible to tell, and even then some lids will be better at certain tests than others, and vice versa. It’s a very tricky area to quantify.
What we do know is that both in the hands and on your head this lid feels really solid, especially in the chin guard area. Some other helmets we have been sent in the past have felt very flimsy in comparison. We also know from past experiences that Fox make very good helmets, and we’ve witnessed them protect riders in some massive crashes.
So in summary then we simply can’t give you a precise definition of how protective this helmet is, or say for certain if it’s any better than a £60 one in a crash, but we can tell you that we’d rather entrust the safety of our heads to one one of these. You’re the only one who can a make a decision about your head.
Oh, and there’s no doubting that one of these feels a hell of a lot better to wear than any £60 lid that we’ve ever tried, and to us that alone is worth a fair bit.
coulda said all that in the first place…
It’s refreshing to hear someone other than myself moaning about how nearly all reviews nowadays spend 90% of the avaliable space picking over the aesthetics with a fine toothed comb (when I can tell whether I personally like the look with a quick glance at the photo, and I dont really care what anyone else thinks about that), then quickly round up the last 10% with something along the lines of “oh and it works ok too.” Reviews should cover all the stuff i CANT get from a photo or a spec list.
anyway i’m all moaned out now, and I fucking want that helmet. Broke my old Fox Rampage about two weeks ago. It was the best/most comfortable/least headache inducing helmet I’ve ever owned.
And it looked ok too.
and when i say nearly all reviews, im not picking on just dirt. tbh dirt is still one of the best, although the reviews have been going slighty “spec list + photo” recently. Its all magazines, and websites. Certain BMX mags are waaaaaaaaay worse. but then i spose theres not much else to talk about with a bmx…
Mountainbikers talking about safety? What next? Nutrition and diet? LOL! The helmet looks awesome, and if it’s anything like their previous lids the saftey will definitely be right up there with the best of them.
OK then…
I’m just happy that there’s an alternative to a D3. EVERYBODY seems to have one!
not in NZ – they cost about $1000 each there.
“There will also be five sizes to choose from in order to get the perfect fit, and Fox haven’t cheated by just using different thickness padding as there are actually two different shell sizes and three different liners”
So… in otherwords they have cheated just as much as every other manufacturer does?
Twat
Yeah seb thats what i thought!!
Hi guys, just to clarify the safety standard issue.
This helmet complies with CE EN1078:2012, ASTM 1952:2000, CPSC 1203, AS/NZ 2063:2008.
Not really clarified much I’m afraid. 661s Comp Shifted helmet is certified to CPSC, CE: 1078, AS/NZS 2063 but weighs less and is more tha 5 times cheaper than this! Can’t help thinking there needs to be a better way of determining ‘Saftey’
Nice looking helmet!
.
Not too bad a price considering what it’s for (and compared to a D3). Plus, you get the choice of the more stealthy look or the crazy in your face burn your retina look. The retina burning one would go well with a pair of similar coloured pyjamas! Lol
Just to say about lids and safety.
I come from the old days of riding bikes( my favourite grifter) and we used to do alsorts of riding when we were kids without helmets they were not even thought of, but we did have many a head injuries. When my kids were starting to ride I made sure they had lids and cool good looking ones.(its only how I could get them to wear one). Then when I started to take up mtb or modern mtb I bought one and have bought one every year since, because apparently they expire??? I kind of started to think that it was abit of a marketing ploy and a farce & that the mtb industry (bike manufactures, clothes, magazines, trails, promoters etc) have started to do anything to get our hard earned cash and safety is agood way to get this off you(i.e. make you paranoid about crashing)but then when for reality I saw friends crashing and then myself actually crashing and having a big bang on my head, I was glad I was wearing my lid, it saved my good looks and intelligent brain, so I can say thanks to these manufacturers, but £300 + for vanity then its just like what Dirt says, this is our choice to spend and choose what to spend on, safety, looks, brains, vanity, ego.
