Fresh Produce: New Shimano Deore

Shimano’s Deore groupset is definitely the unsung hero of the Shimano range, and it’s now had a makeover to make it better than ever. If you’re looking for a value for money groupset then Deore is very hard to beat. Thanks to the trickling down of technology this bargain priced groupset offers many of the features that you’ll find on Shimano’s top end offerings, and we reckon it even looks pretty good too.

Here are some shots and details of the new groupset…

This is what technology filtering down is all about. Pricing is yet to be confirmed, but this new Deore Shadow Plus clutch rear is guaranteed to be a bargain.
The non-clutch version of the rear mech is going to be a tiny bit cheaper and a tiny bit lighter, but why would you?
The 10 speed shifters felt surprisingly good to use.
And don't worry you can remove the gear indicator, plus you can mount the i-spec version directly to compatible brake levers.
Why try and reinvent something when it's already brilliant.
The main change to the brakes is the new calliper which can take IceTec pads should you want to upgrade.
Unlike the brake pads the Deore level rotor is IceTec as standard. We reckon this is where the real difference can be noticed anyway.
The 10 speed cassette will be available in either 11-36 or 11-34 versions.
Chainsets will be available with a silver or black finish, and double or triple configurations. We reckon they good, especially when you consider how little they will sell for.
Gearing options on the triple will be 42/32/24T or 40/30/22T. The later being aimed towards larger wheel sizes.
Doubles will come in 40/28T, 38/26T and 38/24T.
The new front mech has been designed to work with both triple gear ratios.
They might not use cartridge bearings, and they might not be light, but I bet these hubs will be cheap.
Again they are available in black or silver.
And there's even a 142x12mm rear hub.
Plus there's a 15mm one up front to go alongside the QR hub.
Shimano love their QR's so it comes as little surprise to see them offering this 142x12mm QR style axle.

So yeah the biggest news is definitely that a Deore rear mech will now be available with the excellent Shadow Plus clutch stabiliser. It’s a pity that a medium cage is the shortest that it will be available with, but then the short cage Zee rear mech is fairly reasonably priced if you really want a short cage.

It’s also good to see that Shimano have taken the wise decision to not do much to the brakes. Without question Deore brakes have been the best value brakes for several years, and their performance puts many more expensive brakes to shame. Shimano reckon they have improved the modulation and power a little, but on the whole the feel of them remains largely the same as before. The main change then is a new IceTec rotor and compatibility with IceTec pads. With those additions we reckon these brakes might actually be so good that it becomes hard to justify spending any more on some brakes.

Because of the rise in popularity of bigger wheeled mountain bikes Shimano have now also started offering a 40/30/22T tripple chainset option alongside the more conventional 42/32/24T setup. This addition isn’t just with Deore either, you’ll also now find it as an option on both SLX and XT chainsets.

Anyway, as soon as we get some definite prices on this new Deore kit we’ll let you know, and by the time it hits the shops in June we should hopefully have had some to test out and so we’ll be able to let you know if it is every bit the bargain that we reckon it’s going to be.

I prefer going downhill to uphill, but if it involves two wheels I'll probably love it. And yeah, I'm one of those weirdos who likes tinkering with bikes too.
