Hope the M9 test is an improvement on all your other so called bike tests of late where you come away none the wiser. I want to know how the bike handles in certain situations, not about the shite tyres it came specced with. You guys get these bikes and raz about on them for 2weeks or whatever, surely you must be able to write more than 2 paragraphs about it?
I’m quite a fan of the bike tests to be fair – though I see Spooky’s point – they are always nice to read though! is the ellsworth review in this issue as promised as the cover seems to suggest the Scott Genuis is being tested instead!!
I’m with Spooky on this one. Jones has the experience of what makes a good bike he just can’t seem to get it down on paper half the time and we readers are left feeling confused.
Sadly, this one’s a bit the same. Not sure what Jonesy’s position was in the end. I got the vague impression it’s just too much bike, but with Boxxers and an RC4 or BOS rear shock it would be the business.
One other point on the mag, the interview with Gwin is excellent. I found it really insightful and it’s the kind of stuff you’d love to see in the mag every month.
I sort of wonder if there is a truly ‘bad’ bike these days. All the top riders go pretty much the same speed on a wide range of brands and they’re all using different components etc. It’s more about how you feel on a bike. If you get a new bike every year, I don’t think you go as fast as if you’re on a bike you’re truly comfortable on.
Also, the same bike can feel so different. Try 5 different riders Iron Horse Sunday’s – all set-up differently and they feel like 5 different bikes!
magazines can’t right anything bad about a bike/component or the company would pull their advertising. so mags don’t give impartial advice i can’t remember a bad review. My opinion on mag reviews
Thanks for the feedback folks. It would be good to get more detail off you all in order to tune the reviews to how you would like them. Please email me jones@dirtmag.co.uk
Spooky on the Intense there are some pretty strong statements in there. There are also comparisons too, plus locations. In relation to your question it details the fundamental need to use a different shock, the balance in terms of geometry is spot on, so too the steering. The bike is all about the big hit sections, high speed. Remember its only a frame test not a complete bike.
Dave, why are you confused? It concludes that there are quicker and lighter bikes but its nature is hard charging. Would you prefer tests to be more structured? I can do this very easily, but there is a charm about the Intense and a huge history, I think its important to have as part of the discussion why it has such a following
Steelo..both the bike tests this month offer negatives. To be honest I try and avoid putting shitters in the magazine. Still, no bike we have ridden has had a full house of positive feedback….
i don’t have a complaint on the reviews. I’ve never based a purchase on one..atleast not a frame. It would be cool to see a “privateer” rig of the month. That I believe, would say alot with a few pics without having to type a single word and more importantly easier to relate to for us hacks.
