I’ve no idea how we missed this, but there is a brand new 4X track and dirt jumps being built in Afan.
We don’t have much info as of yet, but World Cup track designer and builder Phil Saxenna is on it building a new 4X track Bryn Betws, Afan. We should point out of course that is it not just Phil, they are a ton of local people helping out as well. More info as we get it.

I stole this shot of Phil’s Twitter, cheers Phil!

Hey imagine if they could get a drag lift up that hill?
Mike.

Wow, great news. Certainly ups the appeal for driving all the way out there, though might now need to take two bikes. Looks like thems some big jumps, too. Any ideas on schedule?

Looks good, can’t really see what the gradient’s like in these pictures, looks a bit shallow.

Drag lift would rule so much. Trail and track explosion, this is just so good for the UK! Wish we could have a WC abit further South!

I’m getting on that!
Let’s see: two hours drive East to ride the Chicksands drag strip. Two hours drive West to ride a 4X track. Decisions decisions…..
Better still, ten minutes drive down the road, ride Redhill Extreme! Due to open around Easter time, with new and improved dirt jumps!

As Mike/Billy mentioned, the track is being built by my company Architrail, not just me! In the photos is Tom Macdonald. Will Evans and Duncan Ferris will also be involved too. We’re only building the 4X track, the dirt jumps are being built by some local riders but I’m not sure who. The guys at Bryn Betws Lodge also plan to build some jumpy bermy type tracks and some skills area type stuff. Should be good once finished.
Just in case anyone is tempted, PLEASE STAY OFF the 4X track until it’s finished. At the moment we’re just shifting dirt into the right places, so it’s not rideable anyway.
I’ll be putting some more photo updates on my twitter @philsaxena
Cheers,
Phil

This looks nice, nice to see 4x in Wales, and dirt jumps!

Was up there on Monday talking to the guys about when they plan to open it. They’re saying around Easter if all goes well.
The gradient is fine, about 25% at the top and panning out to about 20% at the bottom.
They’re looking to get 2 rounds of a Welsh 4X series there this season, and could get a NPS round for 2011. I’m trying to sort out the Welsh series with the WDMBA (I’m a founder member) and Borderline to take advantage of this new facility and offer Welsh 4X racers some new events without too much travelling.
Danny Pace has been involved with the build of the dirt jumps along with the Clyne dig crew, so they’re going to be mint!
And there’s going to be a smaller set for people to dial their skills before going crazy on the big stuff.
No news on the skills area yet, but it looks like they’ll get the best people in to build that too.
And it’s at the top of the final section of the Wall trail. The best section in the Afan Valley IMO.

The build is progressing really well. It’s looking amazing up there already.
I’ve been in contact with Chris Roberts of nakedracing.co.uk fame about running a Welsh 4X series based on the NPS format, and he’s interested in getting it going. He’s been very busy with the Caersws Cup lately obviously, but if we can can iron something out, we could get some races there this season.
Watch this space.

We’re planning a public dig day in a few weeks. Plan is to dig in the morning then free uplift in the afternoon. Organisers planning to throw in some free bacon sandwiches too. All welcome – the more the merrier. Will let everyone know once we’ve got a date sorted.
