Dirt 100 2011: Shimano DX SPD Pedals
Shimano’s new XTR platform SPD pedals have come closer to knocking these DX’s off the top spot than any other offering, but these still retain the title. They might not be light, but they’re about as reliable as an SPD pedal gets and the platform is big enough to make a difference when not clipped in. The area where I think these really win over other designs though is the ease in which you can clip in and out, even in mud, and how positive it feels. You just really know where you are with these pedals, and for those of you who like to run them either super tight or loose the adjustable spring tension is also a welcome bonus. If you’ve got the money and are looking to save some weight on a trail bike then the new XTR’s are probably the way to go, but for DH use and value these win hands down every time.

i used to use these on my 6″ AM bike till i move into flats. good pedal for clipping out of and still being able to retain some grip i.e when dabbing on corners, as opposed to the m540 i have on my xc bike which are only clip in or fall off you’re pedals. taken some pretty big bashes on the plastic cage and still strong, no cracks. if you must clip in then these are great choice. personal i prefer flats.
Big Question- BETTER THAN CRANK BROS MALLETS?
Yes
yes because crank bros will fall apart if you use them properly
I have crank bros mallets and i have raced on them for a year now and havent maintenaced them once yet and they still work amazing, iv never had a problem with them.
The mallets don’t have the longevity of the DX’s but do have more float and are light.
I’ve gone back to DX’s after a number or Mallet rebuilds until the springs collapsed!
Crank Bros Flats… Heavy, not that grippy and the bearings are shot after 9 months… Apart from that they f%$kin rock…
It’s all true, Mallets are THE shit, but their insides are made from just that.
Crank brothers pedals have play out of the box, fact. Hence the readily available rebuild kits.
What spd shoes and pedals for aggressive dh riding guys?
