Help a brother out over on the Dirt forum.
Dirt Forum user “dirty_mimi” is racing the Megavalanche in Alpe D’Huez this year and is taking his family.
Can anybody recommend him a good, cheap, self catering place to stay in Alpe D’Huez that’s family friendly?

there’s bloody loads and it is a minefield depending how far up the mountain/town you wanna be, im kicking myself for not taking more numbers from apartment windows last year when on resort. my advice would be to do that for sure to help you if you return next year, apart from that i cannot help sorry
try finding reviews in ski/board forums, as loads of families go there in the winter.

I dealt with a girl called Flavie, very helpful and we had a nice place on the ground floor at the bottom of the main street. 5 mins from the lift.

We just rolled up on the sunday and found a spot easy enough, there’s always plenty of rooms going.
I’m not signed up on the forum but would a chalet do you? They’re cheaper in Vaujany- google Vaujany chalets and you’ll get something cheap. There’s a telecabin straight from vaujanay to the cabin you catch up to the start line- means you miss the queues at the bottom lift and so on, in fact it’s the easiest way to get to the start in the area!
I stay in Allemont which is on the finish line and is nice but 5am wake up for the bus to the lifts.

They were cheap, but most place are (think about how many beds they have for the ski season)
Bit basic, but had everything
They have a pool.
Not too noisy.
Mile or so up hill to the lift was a pain, but downhill on the way back. Note the only lift in the summer is the DMC.
The best bit was the staff didn’t care about muddy bikes in the lift and in your room (maybe not the case in smarter places).
Note some reports of bikes being nicked of balconies.
Note if you clean your bike in the bath like me, bring some kind of grill for the plug. Have a real cool photo of ‘mega 2008′ written in the inch of mud in the bottom of the bath after the race. Being a plumber for the next 2 hours was not so cool!
Not self catering but B&B, friends and I have stayed with http://www.itsalldownhill.co.uk at a chalet in the Altiport past couple of years, Ben is a great host, big garage for all important fettling and a great hot tub to soak away the aches and pains!!
Call the owner of Photo Breton and book his place. It’s just off the main hill.

Have stayed in VAUJANY the last 2 years, and will be staying there again.
Theres a direct lift up to the top of the qualifier start. The town itself is pretty quiet, no crazy party noise etc. Got a pool and a play area and tons of other stuff. It’s very affordable, and some of the chalets are seriously sized.
Oh. And the ride home from the lift station above Oz is great fun.
