Dirt Magazine Covers 1 to 45

October 19th, 2009 @ 10:55 AM

Little bit of Dirt Magazine history here for you; the front covers from the very first issue in January 1997 with Paul Roberts on the cover down at Pinners Trails, Middlesex, up to number 45, May 2004 with a young(er) Josh Bryceland gracing the front.

If I get a bit more time I’ll add some info to each of the covers, in the meantime have a browse through.

  1. Awesome – I think issue 11 was my first… With Peaty on the cover.

  2. Name the riders…….. Issue 1 – Paul Roberts

  3. Issue 3 Shaun Palmer, first shot of him on the Specialized. Photo Steve Gibberson March 23rd 1997 at Sea Otter where he beat Dave Cullinan in the dual.

  4. hold on a minute Billy, what about issue 2? Nigel Stonebridge I think, could be wrong!

  5. Soz Cheesy, jumped the gun a bit there. My library says it’s Gunther Vallant at the KTM snow downhill at Nauders ski resort in Austria, Nigel Stonebridge did go along as well to test the Vario (nice photo of him on page 39) Paul Bliss took the shot
(I’ll try and post up a photo of the Vario, looked like a mental bike!)

So stoked my mum bought up my old mags, sooooo cool, but all the covers have torn off.

  11. 31 – Kirkalde?

  12. 15 – is Andy Pope

  13. Now thinking 31 is Kirkalde and have no idea on 29. Also 45 is Josh and not Steve!

  14. 25 – is Cunny

  15. 29? Is that not Ronning? JK rode for MAXIS/Intense then

  16. You can just see the ‘R’ of Ronning on his Troy Lee.

  17. I have them all upstairs but I can’t be fucked getting them out to be honest…some of those covers are actually quite shocking…no don’t Jerry and Mark days, eh Mike ;)

  18. Speaking of shocking covers…this years Chris Van Dine…what a crock!

  19. MIA 18, 38, 40, any ideas? Fav from above is Palmer issue 7, stinker unknown on issue #38

  25. 38 is Luke Fisher down at Wisley photo’d by none another than Dirt Editor Big Mike (back in the day when he actually used to take photos!) But the contents photo of Palmer in a pvc skin suit on Mammoth Mountain nearly made it to the cover, check it out it’s awesome.

  26. bloody hell. that takes me back. i think i missed 2 issues. Kept most of them for a while but had to get rid of them in the end. i think i still have a couple of old ones left though. Those where the days eh? Maybe not.

  27. 31 is Chris Kovarick!
His ride a few month later at Ft Bill was one of the best race runs i ever did see! +14 seconds win!

  28. I was wrong there 31 is Kirkalde and 29 is said to be Kovarick!

  29. I agree mistaken identity on the 29 cover is Ronning and not Kovarick as the mag said at the time! Well spotted above!

  30. ^ yeh, clips give Ronning away! I also thought Kircaldie for 31 but Colin Bailey also sprung to mind…16 – is the other guy Geoff Schofield? Anyone confirm or deny? French geezer in 27 is Thomas Allier up front, I think.

  31. I loved 40 when it came out.
It was like it said on the tin…MOTO!!..but without the petrol.Superb DIRT.

  32. Real random one, but I think 42 is Ian Osborne

  33. I wish they would sell the old mags on PDF file format or something. There were some older issues that I wanted, that they had run out of already. Hell, it wouldn’t cost them anything (besides labor to scan them in), and I’d be willing to pay cover price to get the info inside. Hey Dirt, how ’bout it?

  34. Yep 42 is Ian Osborne at Hornton Hill

  35. Issue 24 is Rich Goff off old Pashley team. So many great covers, I started with issue 11 Peaty rule Britannia and still got them all today! Paul Bliss covers are just class see Luke Smith issue 30 – whats he up to nowa days, was it freestyle mx?? Cant pick a fav but love 31 the playground, 40 cool as full moto and 46 kicking it up

  38. 44 is Minnaar

  39. Final cover star………..issue 9?

  40. 9 – Jason Parrington

  41. Is that the final list? I’ll get the next 45 issues up then!
