That’s a lot of bad luck so far in 2010. I done something bad to my Rotator cuff about two years ago – took a fair few months before it got even a reasonable amount of strength back – it still gives me bother now and again. Apparently they will operate on athletes with this sort of injury, but there’s no guarantee of success (shoulders are a tricky bit of body tech you know) so for weekenders like me the only real options are physio and gentle exercise to try and gradually build the strength back.
Hopefully Sam can get it sorted quick and be back racing soon – it would be fantastic to see him at Champery again.
i smashed some nerves of the rotator cuff a few years ago (about 5 or 6 years). sometimes it still hurts, especialy if i lift to much weight in the gym for example. but lifting weights helps a lot for stabilisation, so i have no problems at biking and daily life. i didn’t do any operation, as mentioned, there’s no guarantee for success. physio, gym and patience was the key.
first year was a god damn pain in the ass, i almost couln’t lift my arm without pain.
jees, i hate to see riders hurt, but the guy needs to grow a personality! good effort to the interviewer for getting any words out of him. check out Fabien Barel if you want to know how to deal with injury as a professional!
Absolutely gutted for Sam. This was a season that seemed almost tailor made for him. It is a real shame (for everyone) that he will not be playing a major part of this year’s World Cup series. I wish you a speedy recovery Sam.
Mike.
I would like to know:
Which of the Thundercats Sam Hill prefers out of Liono, Cheetara and Snaaaaaarf?
Which of the following is Steve Peat most scared of – ghosts, trumpets, camels or Blue Peter?
Oops, posted that in the wrong bloody news story – should have been in the handlebar width one. Still, maybe a Thundercats video may cheer him up whilst he recuperates?
Lemonhead, Sam was still in a lot of pain, and he was coming to terms with his injury during a World Cup final. Fabien was talking about an injury that happened weeks ago, in a prepared press statememt. Not really fair to compare the two.
Aye there seems to be a hell of a lot of Hill bashing of late, all unjustified IMO. Do you expect him to be sitting there with a big cheesy grin talking about how his season is fucked? Didnt think so..
Speedy recovery Sam, i’ll be rooting for you at Champery!
thanks john and mike, you’re absolutely right. until lemonhead is in a situation even 1/10 of what Hill was in he won’t understand. Hill should aim for world champs at this point and just rest and rehab before then. stationary bike for one handed cardio. get well sam.
I hear what you are saying guys. No over-riding intention to bash the guy when he is down… I guess I wish someone this good at riding backed it up with some sense that he actually wants to be there afterwards! Sam always gives the impression that he is bored and just wants you to leave him alone. Maybe it isn’t the case, but that’s how I (and a fair few others I know) see it. Anyway, good luck to the guy with the recovery. I’d love to see him riding some more soon, but if I was looking for an ambassador for the sport I’d take Fabien any day. IMHO.
chris r, actually i had my professional rugby career ended with 18 month recovery period from nasty shoulder and arm injuries. So although I haven’t had the success 1/1000th that Sam has had, I DO KNOW exactly how it feels to have a CAREER ended. Not just a season. He’ll be back and he’ll do amazingly well I am sure.
very sorry to hear that lemonhead, i should not have assumed! sam definitely seems like he’d always rather be left alone so the fact that he even gave a couple minutes for this interview in the state he was in says a lot for him. Fabien would be a fantastic embassador for the sport, no argument there. but the timing of each of their interviews is like comparing apples to oranges. sorry again.
great interview considering. the man spoke at a difficult time, in pain and with a smile and quiet sense of humour. not everybody is a CG.
..just like Rossi & Moto GP..the WC series has lost some value until he returns.
GWS Sam.
yann, i thinks its the monster energy having maimed the jaws shut, troy brosnan seems to talk with his teeth glued together too, brendan seems unaffected
sam, get better soon you make racing much more exciting you crazy loose cannon you
Sorry not to see him racing at Fort Bill, hope he makes a quick recovery and doesn’t miss too much of the season. However, with these kind of injuries you’ve got to give it enough time to heal properly. Let’s just hope the injury isn’t too severe.
Sam may not be the chattiest guy on the circuit, but he’s got masses of talent on a bike!
Get well soon, Sam!
why cant a dude just be quiet? Why does everyone want him to be something he isnt. Do you people do the same thing to your friends do you wish they were different than they are? probably not. I like the personality Sam has, seems to me he’s always laughing about some shit none of you(us) know about.
Speedy recovery Sam! and get back out asap and make people say “how the fuck does he do it” Personally I want to see him disassemble Val Di Sole again.
Not trying to argue for arguement’s sake here, but I’m not sure Sam is painfully shy. Sam has an introvert(ed) personality but he doesn’t seem to be as shy as he might seem. Research suggests that 50% or slightly more of the population are up the introverted end of the personality spectrum. However, now more than ever, mainly because of US cultural influence (compare it to asian or scandanavian cultures for example), the qualities of extroversion are often more valued in western cultures. Many introverts don’t even realise their brains are naturally introverted because of this cultural reinforcement. Under ‘relaxed conditions’, they process information deeper and therefore slower – this accounts for the more thoughtful, slower responses to questions. But don’t be fooled, the introverted brain has so much going on inside it, it’s why they don’t like being mobbed in social situations – it’s info overload for them. Sam doesn’t try to be extroverted, he is how he is, he may be way up the introverted end of the personality spectrum, but good on him for being himself. You can tell he’s an intelligent guy with a very dry sense of humour. Variety is the spice of life, keep it real Sam.
As a Perth local, I can tell you that he’s pretty much the same as all other riders here: wicked fast, but a bit relaxed about it all. Get well soon Sam, keep us Perth peeps proud!!
i agree with hoodis there a lot of sam bashing this year the mans a legend and puts it on the line very time he throughs his leg over his bike. and has put down some of the bigdest wins and best runs like champery so why dose he need to talk the interviwers ear off its kind of refreshing to have someone as good as sam do his talking on his bike not with his mouth like some of the others
gws sam
Is it even that relevant to pass commentary on the personalities attached to pro riders? If it is, surely it’s got to be purely down to whether or not they are good ambassadors for the sport? IMHO Fabien and Sam are both awesome but their ‘stage presence’ isn’t what inspires me to get out on my bike.
That said when Sam is on form (i.e not on pain relief and feeling absoutely gutted to be sidelined) I find him pretty funny -just in a less blatant and more intellegent dry kind of way…
Get well Sam.
Cheers Dave for the peronality breakdown stuff. Personaly I love watching Sam Hill interviews ALMOST as much as seeing him ride…not quite but…almost. His slightly awkward, quiet sense of humour cracks me up! maybe because Im an introvert scandinavian Dave?! I like him because he is what he is. Anyway, wish you a speedy recovery Sam.
Dave, you have a very good point there. People should be who they are and not put on facade for others sake. I guess if that is enough for everyone then who am I to say otherwise… ‘I’ just get frustrated with Sam because ‘I’ want more out of him, ‘I’ want him to be more of an outspoken/camera friendly media figure because ‘I’ will never get to chat to the guy, spend time with him and learn from him in any other way than through the media. This is the same for 99% of the world who might take an interest and when his rounded personality doesn’t come through then it leaves SOME people disappointed. I make now, nor have made and neither will I make any assumption about Sam’s intelligence, I don’t know him… and yes maddog people like different people (or not) for different reasons. I don’t ‘like’ or ‘dislike’ Sam, once again – I don’t know him – I know what I see in the media, which I realise can be misleading but at the same time frustrating.
i like the individuality and all the different personalities as much as watching them ride different lines and tracks. I think it is amusing watching Sam interview. His expression at times seems as if he’s about to give you some insight then…nothing. Just lets his bike do the talking instead. brilliant.
There are all sorts of personalities. I like that he is quiet and chilled out. Far too many people running their mouth and talking s*#t. I reckon he would be pretty gutted doing an injury that could mean his job and success of his career.

Sam is painfully shy which anyone who has met him knows. That’s why he comes across as aloof in a lot of interviews.
