Fresh Produce: Bluegrass Explicit Full Face Lid
There’s some serious competition these days at the cheaper end of the full face market, but we reckon this new Bluegrass lid can more than hold its own.

We love the unique look of this Explicit lid both in terms of finish and the overall shape. Even the peak is a good shape. Of course styling doesn’t count for much if it doesn’t fit, and we know this is a personal thing, but all four of us in the office reckoned this was very comfy. Having five sizes on offer should mean that pretty much everyone should be left thinking the same too.
With a relatively large number of vents it should also prove to be one of the better lids in terms of cooling, particularly with the padding also having numerous cut-outs. Of course you’re still going to sweat in it so it’s good to see that all the lining is easy to remove so that it can be washed. We also like the large and open vents on the chin guard as anything that helps get air into your lungs is always a good thing.
The 1018g weight (for this large) means this lid isn’t the lightest but at the same time it’s also far from the heaviest and we like the fact that it has a good solid feel unlike some of the super light offerings that are out there. The double D-ring closure again helps with the secure feel of this lid. The neat breakaway attachment on the peak should also mean that you don’t have to run out and buy a new peak the first time you smash it into the dirt.
Overall then we reckon this is a great value lid at Just £109.99, and if you’re not into this particular finish then Bluegrass do offer several different ones including a pretty much plain black version.

If anything it looks even better from the left hand side.

Here you can see just how open the chin guard is to allow as much airflow as possible. You can also see the vent holes in the colour matched liner.

At the back it’s a case of a few exhaust ports and a some stylish lines that’ll also help keep your goggle strap in place.

And finally here’s a close up of the nifty little break-away device on the peak. If you smack the peak on something it unclips and allows the peak to rotate further backwards, hopefully stopping it from breaking. Afterwards you simply clip it back together.

Not a fan of the colour scheme but it looks good none the less.
Like the look of this lid. Very stylish. Would like to see more colour schemes. Wonder how it fairs in the safety tests up against the likes of the D3.
saw a guy riding in this lid with the matching orange and blue kit…..all brand new and shiny….it was loud to say the least
For some reason reminds me a bit of the old school Giro Mad Max.
Bluegrass website has the large weighing 940g so who telling porkies? Either way i’m putting the black one on my xmas list.
i would go all in on that colour if i hadn’t recently bought a new carbon lid. nice and bold.
tumble, just weighed it on the office scales. 1018g.
I can indeed verify the break away clip on the peak works! Really love this helmet for the price! sure I would love to spend £400 to smash it off a rock!
How’s the internal shape? I’ve got a fairly narrow head, the Urge & Poc “round” shape doesn’t suit me, but this looks promising – anyone got one and care to share? Ta.
I have a very ‘Stewie Griffin’ shaped head, will it fit that??
decent enough but the plastic liner falls off after a few rides..
Neil, the fit is very similar to 661 helmets. I had this helmet all of last season, replacing a 661 evolution carbon and they felt very similar in M.
I just bought a D3 carbon, but that’s just because i got a good deal on it, not because I’m dissatisfied with the Bluegrass. The Bluegrass is definately lighter than the D3, but in return it doesn’t feel like it offers the same level of protection, it’s got a much more “airy” feel. If I enter an enduro/avalanche competition, I will def. run the bluegrass as it is lighter and cooler..
