Gee in 1st, Cam Cole in 2nd, and Minnaar so close in 3rd. More news to come…..
Gee Atherton sent the home crowds bonkers with an amazing, flawless ride down Aonach Mor this afternoon.
The rain that the forecasters predicted stayed away and together with the huge crowds that Fort William always attracts made it a fantastic final to watch.
Danny Hart set the crowd a light early on with a long spell in the hot seat until Mick Hannah put in a 4:37.75 to take the cushion. The next 6 riders failed to better the clock until Gee Atherton threw down a 4:35.70 which put him on the hot seat and earned himself a rocked out solo from the resident long haired guitarist.
4th fastest qualifier Aaron Gwin came close with a 4:37.71, next up Maxxis Rocky Mountain rider Cameron Cole, proving his qualifying result was no fluke, went faster than Gwin to take second spot with a time of 4:36.18.
Second fastest qualifier Sam Blenkinsop looked rapid all weekend but could only manage a 4:37.81 giving him 6th place, 2.11 down.
All eyes were now on Minnaar who was looking for his third win in a row at the Fort. Coming into the hip, Minnaar was down a fraction on Atherton and couldn’t make up the time along the motorway section where he is usually strong, finishing in 3rd with a 4:36.91 1.21 down on Gee.
The exuberant Fort William crowd went nuts as Gee Atherton took his first Fort William win.
Sam Hill had a DNS after wrecking his shoulder during timed practise.
Other highlights include Shaun O’ Connor in 8th, Gracia suiciding the big step down, Danny Hart in 12th, Ben Cathro was on a flier until his chain jammed on the last section of motorway and finally the Fort Will crowd for being so loud and shouty, amazing atmosphere.
Random Fact: More than 18,000 spectators at the World Cup basked in the sunshine over the weekend, consuming more than 1,500 litres of water and 1,500 burgers.

June 6th, 2010 at 4:28 pm
Just saw the podium and they made a mistake, giving Cam Cole 3rd and Minnaar 2nd! Strange . . . Oh and now they are on the podium again in the right order!!!
June 6th, 2010 at 4:28 pm
Hmm, just saw the podium on freecaster Minnaar second and Cole third? Wonder what happened with the timing there. Anyway great result Gee!

June 6th, 2010 at 4:37 pm
hopefully gathered enough points to get off the bottom of fantasy league, would’ve been great had kovarik not got the puncture, fair play gee

Yeeeaaah Cam!!! Team kiwi!!! making us proud over there brother!!!
June 6th, 2010 at 4:57 pm
Great runs by Gee and Cam, but the real winner in my book is CG with his suicide off the big step down after his chain guide (or chain, or something) jammed. The man has style…
June 6th, 2010 at 5:10 pm

June 6th, 2010 at 5:25 pm

June 6th, 2010 at 6:03 pm
They should definitely have Cedric Gracia doing the commentary as often as possible. Legend!
June 6th, 2010 at 6:19 pm
Well done Gee, got to be stoked with that! first victory at Fort Bill! go on son!
June 6th, 2010 at 6:55 pm
Yes Gee! Been a while since we last saw you up top, but the man deserves it! I should also add that the times are ridiculously close for all top riders… proper racing where every mistake counts! The standard is getting higher…
June 6th, 2010 at 7:02 pm
gutted for ben cathro…
June 6th, 2010 at 7:18 pm
Suicicde?!
As in no hander right? If not that’s kind of an ignominious end for old Cedric…
June 6th, 2010 at 7:34 pm
Anyone know what went wrong with Steve Smith? He was fastest in practise then came in way down in the final
June 6th, 2010 at 7:38 pm
Is there a video of CG’s race run anywhere? I missed it…
June 6th, 2010 at 8:00 pm
Yes Gee, so stoked for the kid, hopefully give him the confidence to win a few more this year (with brendog taking the rest) and take the series, especially now Hills lacking in the points.
June 6th, 2010 at 8:18 pm
Steve Smith had a crash near the top. slid out on a turn and went thru tape. He showboated the nissan jump pulling a nac-nac I think
June 6th, 2010 at 8:49 pm
Awesome for Gee, and Gwin stomping it for sure! Come on Peaty “you can do it”!
June 6th, 2010 at 10:08 pm

June 6th, 2010 at 10:31 pm

Gee is a fag
June 7th, 2010 at 1:10 am
18,000 over the whole weekend, shows how far mountain biking has to go to becoming an establihed sport, even wigan pull in more than that for 90 mins of footy every fortnight :/
June 7th, 2010 at 6:16 am
Gwin up by a shedload at the last split.
Shaun O’Connor, top 10, first year in seniors.
Bryn’s split time(s)?
June 7th, 2010 at 7:46 am
@Sykesy – Don’t be daft – 18,000 to a remote town in the Scottish Highlands? It’s hardly the same as a football match in the middle of the city!
June 7th, 2010 at 8:17 am
Gee man takes the top spot. go on lad!!
June 7th, 2010 at 12:46 pm
@sykesy – and of the 17,884, how many of them go home happy?
June 7th, 2010 at 1:49 pm
im still buzzing from the weekend at fort william, more so than i ever would at a football game, even if scotland won the wc haha
June 7th, 2010 at 3:00 pm
Why did the announcer start talking about football being national sport or something before the presentation!!! Get over it football is over 100 years old of course its going to have wider appeal. If people in the sport would stop bitching about lack of coverage and use that energy to help build on the great work of Dirt, mtbcut, freecaster eurosport etc then things will keep getting better. Watching it live is really exciting only once you get to the top ten, hannah fastest then gee and then watching gwinn, minnar and blenki come so cos had me shouting at my laptop.
