Gravity Enduro hits Ireland

Bejesus! Organiser Niall Davis just beamed over news of a Gravity Enduro series in Ireland.

Gravity Enduros are fast becoming the new rock and roll. So I suppose in Ireland that makes it…well take your pick from…Undertones/Stiff Little Fingers/Therapy?/Thin Lizzy/Van Morisson…er and U2.

I reckon Glyn O’Brein is going to be the man to beat here with Victor Lucas as an outside chance in the leprechaun category.

Entries open 1st December

Dates and Venues:

Round 1: Wicklow – 8th April

Round 2: Dublin – 17th June

Round 3: Limerick – 1st July

National Championships: 12th August (to be announced)

Round 4: Wicklow – 9th September

Niall tells us:

There are so many different formats for Gravity Enduro racing but the Irish one is the perfect combination of competition and a great day on the bikes with your mates. It’s a two day event with practice on Saturday and the race on Sunday, so make a weekend of it.

What makes this event unique?

There’s a Pot of Gold at the end of each special stage! (Well a cash prize)

Irish pub on Saturday night for the pre race “Energy Guinness”

No transition time limits so you can relax and enjoy the day

Natural trails- No boring trail centre courses

You can start the event in any order; you could ride together with a group of your pals for example.

Each venue will have its own unique terrain and challenges. Routes are about 25km long and have 4 or 5 “special stages” (5-10mins long) running simultaneously, depending on the event. Riders are broken up by age categories and one Pro Category. Entry opens 1st December.

  1. Rad x phat^ken

  2. deadly

  3. Sounds like the same foramt as the Kona mash ups that went spectacularily tits ups. I’m bang game but will wait to see how a few go first…

  4. Why did the Kona races that not work?…I know that Niall has a considerable depth of experience organising races and is a top class xc and dh rider so he is the right man for the job I’d think.

  5. Good luck to all concerned with this! It’s great to see new stuff happening (well, new to Craggy Island!).

  6. As far as I understand from several I spoke to that did the Kona mash ups, the timing system could not cope with people independantly starting outside of a set order. Therefore if things did go wrong, then there would be no recourse to a manual back up as with the UKG rounds ran by Steve Parr. The manual back up there saved a headache when it was discovered that carbon helmets absorbed the timing beams intended for the chips.

I’m not disparaging them, as I I’d be well up heading over for a few, just that I’d rather not travel from the other side of the Irish sea to an untested event. If the first few og well, I hope to be there with the crew!

  7. Fair play to Niall and Crew for sticking their head above the parapet and organizing this, will try My hardest to get over in 2012.
Oh and looking forward to the “Energy Guiness” on Saturday :-)

  8. Yeah Joe, I was genuinely curious what went wrong, thanks for filling me in. We have some amazing unofficial xc here, and a large amount of that is on the doorstep of Dublin city.

Time will tell if Niall can execute it with style, I really hope he can. We might even end up racing each other if he does :-)

  9. The off piste sections of the UKG series were the best bits! Brap brap.
