It’s Friday and we got some special shoes in the office, some Minnaar 5:10 shoes with clips. Now 5:10 are famous for their flat pedal shoe with the stealth rubber soles so to bring out a clip in shoe is quite a suprise to us.
As yet there is no shipping date for the UK or Europe, infact I think Greg Minnaar himself has the only other pair!
We’ll keep you posted on price and availability when we know.
Oh and a quick check of the scales reads 624g per shoe.

they look like brothel creepers!
March 12th, 2010 at 10:59 am
not bad design on the shoe… but the sol is way too thick…
March 12th, 2010 at 11:01 am
The pretend license plate ‘Fiveten’ bit looks like something straight outta the 80′s, can’t see these being a big seller on looks alone! but if they’re like other 5:10′s then they will be a good shoe, i’ve got a 3 year old pair and they’re still as good as new(well nearly).
March 12th, 2010 at 11:04 am
Very special and not in a good way.
March 12th, 2010 at 11:08 am
Think they look great! Like the fact 5:10 have put some clip mounts on the bottom. Hope there out over here soon.
March 12th, 2010 at 11:11 am
I prefer most of the other 2010 shoes. I agree about the sole being too thick, everything else seems fine though…
March 12th, 2010 at 11:11 am
Its such a shame that what was the most highly anticipated shoe looks like a platform shoe.
March 12th, 2010 at 11:17 am
Man, I like the Creeper look. Been thinking of getting some big fat suede ones again for work, so these will complement the look for riding.
I suspect the shoes will be pretty good. Minnaar’s not likely to be riding in crap shoes.
March 12th, 2010 at 11:32 am
I don’t think the soles are as thick as people are thinking , looks to me like the rubber from the soles over laps the uppers by about an inch other wise there would be no room to put your foot in
it’s probably to protect your foot from knocks perhaps
March 12th, 2010 at 11:33 am
unless you mean in an aesthetic way
March 12th, 2010 at 11:55 am
Yeah Leon, I’m presuming aesthetics. That it a mothership of a sole.
Pimp my shoe!
March 12th, 2010 at 12:01 pm
Just measured the sole, 31mm on average, as opposed to 27mm on a conventional pair. The insole is about flush with the red stitching.
March 12th, 2010 at 12:15 pm
“Oh and a quick check of the scales reads 624g per shoe” haha brilliant! Didn’t realise we were shaving weight off what we wear too these days…….
p.s. they really do look like built up ‘special’ shoes
March 12th, 2010 at 12:46 pm
Hideous.
March 12th, 2010 at 12:51 pm
Sorry, what’s the point?
Won’t the super sticky rubber hinder clicking in and out?
March 12th, 2010 at 1:05 pm
Love the styling but agree with the rest… not sure what advantage the stealth rubber has for a pair of clips.
March 12th, 2010 at 1:23 pm
The sole looks ridiculously chunky, but can’t wait to see how they perform.
Karate Chris – for those moments when you can’t get clipped back in quick enough for a section and need the grip on the platform. I think I can see these being a big seller regardless of the looks.
March 12th, 2010 at 1:57 pm
Pete… Agreed.
When your skidding your way down champery or throwng a foot off in a berm, being able to slap your foot on not caring if it clips in or not, makes me understand why Mr Minnaar would want these in his stable…
From looking at the sole, it’s not the usual stealth dot set up anyway, so won’t be as grabby as the impact?
March 12th, 2010 at 2:20 pm
i wish someone would give the designers at fiveten something other than finger paints and crayons. everything they do is seriously unpleasant.
on the other hand greg minaar is fast as shit and can wear whatever he likes.
March 12th, 2010 at 2:39 pm
These will be brilliant used with clippy pedals with platforms, eg. Crank Bros Mallets. I think they will do well.
You still won’t catch me clipping in though…
March 12th, 2010 at 2:42 pm
Damn 31 mm is pretty thick , good for the vertically challenged i guess
March 12th, 2010 at 3:01 pm
I don’t see the stalth rubber being an advantage unless there are pins to stick too.
March 12th, 2010 at 3:02 pm
and Billy the web, how stiff are they?
March 12th, 2010 at 3:04 pm
FUGLY
March 12th, 2010 at 3:10 pm
@Graham, very stiff.
March 12th, 2010 at 3:15 pm
Davi:
“When your skidding your way down champery or throwng a foot off in a berm, being able to slap your foot on not caring if it clips in or not, makes me understand why Mr Minnaar would want these in his stable…”
Why not just use a pair of flats then? On a steep and tech tracks where efficiant pedalling is not much of a concern, why not stick to flats and not worry about clips at all. Save the spuds for Canberra and the like
March 12th, 2010 at 3:15 pm
Hey, you’re missing the point, these shoes have been weighted especially so that Greg’s center of gravity is lowered. Come on Billy get the facts right. He’s also gone up a size with the space filled in with some kind of carbon composite to get a better balance front to rear.
March 12th, 2010 at 4:04 pm
Orthopaedic at best.
March 12th, 2010 at 4:23 pm
Nothing makes you look as “special” as 5.10 impact shoes.
March 12th, 2010 at 5:20 pm
Why do 5:10 struggle so much to make their shoes not only perform well but also look half decent (half normal would be a start). These are just ugly and stupid looking that I actually splurted (real word, I think) a laugh out when the page loaded up. Special shoes that have to be worn with shorts et al, it’s not going to come together very well is it?
March 12th, 2010 at 5:33 pm
There smart as id even think about getting spd’s to run em.
March 12th, 2010 at 5:37 pm
Bell – your right – I have the impact Hi’s and they look totaly shit!!! However they do protect your sticky-out-ankle-bone bit when sliding along a french road, i have found…
March 12th, 2010 at 5:40 pm
Not stoked!
March 12th, 2010 at 5:57 pm
is it safe to say that 5.10 is the girl with an amazing body and “skill” but whose mug just makes you squint a little or in some cases alot?

that came out a while ago and might help with the stealth rubber/clip question
March 12th, 2010 at 10:32 pm
Ronin, I believe the term BOBFOC is what you’re looking for in regards to “that” girl. Body Off Baywatch Face Off Crimewatch.
March 13th, 2010 at 3:56 pm
Srsly, if i want sticky rubber, I´ll wear impacts. Great shoe, no discussions there.
If I need to clip in, I´ll wear Vans Warner. They look good (better than these anyway) and probably work just as well. And I can get them now.
March 13th, 2010 at 4:00 pm
Just watched the feature on Vital – they should´ve stuck with that design. Way better.
March 13th, 2010 at 8:30 pm
Those aren’t the final model remember guys….
I’ve heard less stiff and less thick on the soles….
March 14th, 2010 at 12:24 am
This has to stop. I get it that they grip like no other, but they will simply sell
more shoes if they employ a professional footwear designer. There was an interview in Dirt a while back with some bloke who “designed” all these attrocities. It was painful to read. I guess from the unique “design language” these are straight out of his special sketchbook too. Only surpassed by those Karver things that are beyond any adult discussion. Retarded. I don’t care if Vans Era’s “don’t perform like these”, there has to be a line drawn here. Slipping off the pedal on a dusty corner of a summer evening completes the bikes on dirt dream for me. And you think Lycra makes our sport look retarded? These things are on the snakeboard level of XXXtreme credibility. Messers Rose and Bryceland plugging Nike 6.0 every opportunity isn’t enough to make skaters think we’re coolcatz, when these 5 10 orthopedic beasts are prowling the sport.
March 14th, 2010 at 12:27 pm
TwoWigs – calm down, its a pair of shoes? Who cares what they look like as long as they work well, function over fashion.
March 14th, 2010 at 8:18 pm
I really dont get it… they pretty much look like a pair of normal trainers, no? but just look at the rest of DH gear.. pj’s, checks etc. These shoes are just following the fashion surely?
Unless you guys are in the same camp as me and would like to see a pair of 5-10 brown leather brogues?
March 14th, 2010 at 9:21 pm
Twowigs, i’m sure your the height of fashion on a dh bike yourself…..
The designer may well design an amazing shoe or any other product for that matter. But it’s the MARKETING people at the end of the day who have the say so about how it should look, that’s how it works unfortunately. So if 5:10 have a bunch of middle age climbers behind that, then however ‘core’ or ‘cool’ the designer is, it doesn’t mean jack.

what no pimps in the house ?
March 15th, 2010 at 8:19 am
oh goodness.. looks like they need some design help..

As soon as I put a helmet on I look like a tit, whether it be my dirt lid, XC or full face, but I don’t mind if it works.
Same deal with 5.10s, look shit, work well, though I quite like the look of my 5.10 freeriders.
I’m with Ed, I’d like to see 5.10 brogues, and maybe a Troy Lee Designs tweed jacket and trousers, just right for a day of bicycling in the country…
March 15th, 2010 at 10:17 pm
teddy boys…?
March 16th, 2010 at 2:15 pm
Tim, height of fashion is missing the point. If you want to be ripped-off with half-arsed products, be my guest. From experience, small performance footwear brands don’t have product managers driving styling direction. This isn’t Nike. Or in this case it looks like a combined product manager/designer, like this guy driving the whole mtb product line. In terms of marketing, the product is put on world class athletes feet and they grip like no other. Given to magazine tests and they grip like no other. People buy them and they grip like no other and they tell there friends…simple and effective.
The 5:10 climbing shoes are legendary cool as they are strictly form follows function creations. Every footwear designer has a 5:10 climbing shoe sitting under the desk at some point for calming inspiration. These mtb shoes are simply bad designs. Yes, they grip = they work. So just strip back all that bad 90s BuffaloSkate detailing and give something that is a full on performance concept – like 5:10 have done with their climbing shoes for the last 30 years.
Five years of reviews starting with “they may not be to everybody’s taste, but…” is an overdue wake-up to sort this poo out and double their sales.
It should be a product with the same simply brilliant depth of thought, performance and quality as a Turner frame or a Chris King headset. That’s the point.
Check out Rapha if you want high quality tweed style through function cycling gear.
As for Brogues, Reef did a cool twisted shoe a decade ago called the “Broker”. It had measured wit.
April 9th, 2010 at 11:43 pm
DH shoe design should be born out of what they actually need to do. This is, or should be a serious peice of “equipment”. Sadly this is an adapted peice of fashion that is better suited to mooching around town. When was the last time you saw someone wearing moto-X boots in the pub. Nuff said.
April 12th, 2010 at 12:32 am
just wondering if there has been info on availability yet.

You’d look like Harry Hill in a pair of those!
