New Dirt website, what do you think?
Dave the Electrician, Ron the Plumber and Trev the Plasterer have rebuilt the Dirt website!
I tell you what, planning permission for this one took a while, the old website had been around for so long it was classified as a listed building. But once the council gave us the green light for a renovation and the bats were safely rehoused and the tea urn and biscuits had been ordered then Dave, Ron, Trev and the rest of the crew turned up to work some of their magic.
So wipe your shoes or tyres and come on in for a complimentary pint of cider and pork pie for a look around.
It’s still early days, the paints a bit wet, some of the pipes are leaking and I swear I got electrocuted by the bare wire in the bog. But aside from some expected teething problems we’re very happy with the job the builders have done and hope you like it too.
In between cups of sweet milky tea Dave The Electrician told me: “Well geezer, see it’s like this, the new site is just the dogs b******s all round, it gives tablet users & mobile users a much better experience altogether. Plus the new Mpora video player has been souped up, it now has new features like the 3 second rewind button, slowmo, screengrab and the ability to skip beyond the buffer plus mobile support. It’s a pucker job.”

seems to be running smooth so far . looks good to
nice and easy on the eye, I’m happy. I’m also easily pleased
shit
Ha ha.
Me likey! The site and the comment.
Just a suggestion maybe high light the new post in the news section so people can see at a glance the new post of the day
Keep the suggestions coming!
Comments section seem slightly detached from the related article.
I agree with this. I feel it would be better to have the layout as follows:
- Article
- Comments
- Post reply to comment box (it really annoys me that its above the comments for some reason!)
- Previous/next story
- Related/popular
“Posted by” perhaps not needed, or put at the top somewhere?
Thank you for pandering to my OCD.
Comments is another area we will be continuing to tighten up over the coming weeks in order to create a better user experience for you guys. All feedback is greatly appreciated, keep it coming!
I think Nic’s layout is perfect! Would also like to see a return of comment scoring (thumbs up and down or just thumbs up), it makes finding good comments easier and on a very basic level I like upvoting funny comments!
We’ve tinkered with the piping and moved the article layout around a bit based on this and other suggestions, hope it makes a difference for you guys!
Snazzy! Makes me realise how tired the old one looked.
slick
I liked the old one but I’m also scared of change.
Sweet job alright lads. Needs to have the newest article on the top of the page on the mobile site for sure though.
Ahhh thats bettter!
@dirtmagazine has a new website, what do you think? http://t.co/2tQ66ndV
I liked the old one, but its day one, so like a new pair of trainers i’ll get comfortable with it as time passes…
New website is bitchin’ but I agree it needs new posts highlighted
Lots of small updates will be released over the coming weeks and highlighting new and visited posts is one of them, so keep an eye out.
Seems ok but cannot open articles in a new tab.Don’t like to go back and forth.
Looks way better!!
it’s like hitting a new trail. thnx for the new look, dirt.
Better layout, less scrolling is always good.
A couple comments however:
* Ideally I’d like to see a little more colour or gradient. I like that the articles are spaced out, and less scrolling, but it’s kinda hard to distinguish between it all
* Thew news boxes don;t line up and irks me to no end
Looking Good!
It’s pretty white for a Dirt website! You could maybe keep the subjects like “videos” to one row and make the subject title more distinguished. Simple is good!
Just want to add another comment. i use another well know site on a Daily basis, mostly for uploading photos to.
i feel the MPORA side of the site isnt very user friendly when it comes t uploading photos with the file size limit, which in the past is not stated before uploading and images fail to upload due to oversized files. Also stats, EXIF,views, etc would be nice if that feature was added and maybe promote that fact on your main page that user photos can be added and viewed by others.I for one would use Dirt alot more for photo uploading if the features where improved.Get a photo of the day or week on the go for us no life fuckers that spend to much time at a pc or stuck behind a lenses instead of riding
Also a Blog tab function in the user profile would be nice
The builders are working on photo and video uploads directly to Dirt.
Looks more appealing to the eye. But I do like how on the old site you can see all posts in chronological order. I do like to pick up where I left off and feed dirt content directly into my veins.
I like!
http://dirt.mpora.com/news looks great, and so do the articles themselves.
However, I find http://dirt.mpora.com really hard to scan. I usually come here to see if something new has been posted… so I quickly scanned the list of articles. I find that is really hard with the mix of horizontal and vertical elements, especially because they have a different height (as Deon pointed out as well).
Here is an article by someone else who probably tells it better than me: http://jfornear.co/the-pinterest-layout-will-not-save-you/
Mobile version looks great! But IMO it suffers from duplicate content between featured articles, news and the other categories (e.g. Ben reid ripping is visible in Featured, News and Videos). On the desktop, it’s OK if some stuff is duplicated because you can more quickly dismiss it, with the limited screen space it is harder.
Anyway, big step forward from the old site! Keep building
Embedded videos on DIRT aren’t working now… I surf daily, and the site update is the only change.
Running Firefox 16.0.1, and I tried it without any of my add-on’s active to no avail.
Loads better. the old one took ages to open. Bit like my first wife.
looks a bit like the dirt office. kind of sloppy, but somehow organized.
Looks GREAT! For a while yesterday there was a world cup section, I think that will be proper sweet when the 2013 season starts!
I think Dirt is awesums. Just wish there was something similar to this out there for people like myself who are a more XC-oriented than the gravity-assisted, big-cajones style of riding that is at the fore here. Nevertheless, it is awesums..
I’m old, so i smell of wee, and I don’t like change
mmmmmmm, not sure just yet – although with change we all adapt so i am pretty sure in a day or so this will seem “the norm”…..I like the part at the top where we can slect previous and next story
You are nearly there – just need a few more colors and buttons etc – and you will be up there with the best = http://www.lingscars.com
Ha, Ling knows whats up.
Looks good, how about filtering out swearing in the comments. Seems like less sites are bothering to do it now and the site could get viewed by young kids.
I work for the Government, and because they hate me, I’m forced to use Windows Explorer 7, and it doesn’t like your new website. I’m going to have to look at the website only at home now
Or, get a nice mobile phone
The website looks great in mobile chrome!
I preferred much more the old version. Now it’s confused
Liking the new layout… Works much better on mobile devices. Still missing a ‘view full site’ option though.
Switching vids to full screen on my PC browser just produces a blank screen. (Firefox). Task manager is the only way out of it.
it seems to run well, but could you increase all the font sizes by a few points please
also, the bit at the bottom (bio, newsletter etc) seems a bit crowded and the photo behind it doesn’t add anything to the site
also, on the homepage you could have the latest 10 fresh products/ videos for you to scroll through sideways. (keep the layout how it is but you can see more if you scroll through them.) a world cup bit on the homepage would be nice for when the season kicks off too.
saying all this, i do like like the new site a lot! thanks guys, and sorry for sending too many ideas your way
Hey matt, you should be able to zoom in using your browser – personalised to you text size!
It’s a total mess. A linear news feed are easier to follow
http://dirt.mpora.com/news/
I’m sure that I’ll get used to the look, but the player won’t go to full screen for me and returning to the home page crashes my Safari browser.
hmmm, well well well… in my opinion the font looks rather poor.
for now i do not see any benefit in the change….
Looks great, Nice contrast from my background so stands out well! Good job !
Video: if I press Full Sceen Button the screen goes black. cannot change this with the Escape button.
On an other website the same Video works ok. ?!
New site is cool. Obviously been a lot of work gone into it.
Only thing i would say is that on my first few visits im still getting used to the more subtle delineation between content elements, feel a bit lost in the white.
I’m too tired to figure it out, i’ll be back tomorrow.
I bet it’ll be bloody brilliant come WC season though.
I think you should get mpora so sort their f$”^%king videos out on android phones. pisses me right off.
This!
Yeah not so many related article bars. Makes the page look cluttered and detaches comments from the article
The navigation doesn’t work on my android phone. If I try to view the rogate video it opens the Ben Reid video. The page also looks very odd on mobile.
Looks great! The only thing that’s a bit wacky is having the comments section way down here. Good work though
Not a fan of this type of layout, I prefer a blog style front page where the stories all run down the page in chronological order over this style. Other than that I like what I see.
While I remember, the “next up” thing that pops up towards the end of videos on the mpora player is bloody annoying!
It ruins the viewing to the point that I will watch a video elsewhere if its available. Seriously, just put it at the end when the video has finished playing, or better yet, take it out altogether!
Change scares me!!!! but I luv a good fright!!
I personally find it a bit of a mess to look at , seems like shit load of info slapped all over the place to me.
font doesn’t match
A bit confusing to be honest, with info/vids all over the page!
Its too scatty, its hard to see which is the latest post.
The previous layout was what made the dirt website so much better than the moto website.
I genuinely did get electrocuted while trying to sort something out on the Dirt site a couple of years back. Happy days x
Like another site, I like to pop on quickly to look for latest articles, and am finding this more confusing then the old linear website, which I had no problems on on my mobile devices… wondering why it needed changing!? Like Bear and various others say, it’s simplicity made it better.
