Sam Hill had a massive crash during official timed practise today at Fort William.

UPDATE:

The latest news this morning is that Sam Hill has damaged his shoulder ligaments, but not broken any bones. We understand that the Specialized plan is that Hill will start his qualifying run this afternoon but will pull over once he’s left the start hut and rest up for Sunday, since he’s a top 20 protected rider this should ensure he starts the finals just to try and salvage some points.

It’s unclear whether the UCI will allow this but all in all it doesn’t sound good for Sam Hill. More news when we get it.

From the gondola I saw Hill slumped on the grass looking very shaken near the fast rocky drop/left hander a few corners up from the entry to the woods.

The latest news is that he has been to the local hospital for xrays to his shoulder.

Team mate Brendan Fairclough said “Sam doesn’t normally moan about injuries but he was looking pretty bad”

Healing vibes out to Hill and hope he’s back in the saddle for Sundays final.

  7. aren’t they the 1750 rims? texted my mate about this and he said he had seen hill in the pits about 3.50 and he looked fine. practise stopped at 4. guess we’ll have to wait an see what happens in qualifiying

  10. Jim1710: The 2010 EX1750 wheelset uses EX500 rims, just painted white and with custom decals on them, but they are otherwise identical rims. in the most recent pics put up, looks like he bent a crank arm too. serves him right for running pink grips ;)

  28. Is it just me or is his rebound ajuster even smashed up in the first pic?. Really must of been a hard crash, hopefully the bike took more of the crash than sam.

  29. If it looks like an EX 1750 and it says EX 1750 then its an EX 1750..period..if it was a Mavic 823 it wouldn’t have folded like a rim made out of pa pier mache’. Anyway, The EX 500 rim is identical to the most recent version of DT’s 5.1d rim, which isn’t a DH rim. Fuck knows why he’s running them, especially at Fort William.

  31. @Luke, in the first pic, never mind the adjuster, check out the central bar on the rear triangle, its bent right up.. f-ck! that takes some doing, maybe they’ve thinned out the tubing, never seen a current Demo look so messy

  33. @vortexian: that central bar on the real triangle is sposed to be bent like that. its so they can run 150mm rear hubs, whereas the stock demo’s are 135mm, so it will look bent in comparison to a standard demo rear end

  51. The Sam Hill haters out there don’t understand the privileged position Sam is in. Sam makes his sponsors happy on the track. Other riders who don’t get the results also have to go out and sell themselves off the track too. The reason Sam doesn’t have this sparkling media personality is that he hasn’t needed to develop it. Some people sit better in front of cameras than other too. I figure Sam may have decided this is something he might not be good at, and has concentrated on racing instead. At the end of the day he rides like a demon and WC downhill isn’t a personality contest.

    I may not necessarily root for Sam when I’m watching a race, but am nearly always in awe of his riding.

  53. So a Question about Qualifying. A rider that is 20 top is auto seeded, does not have to finish his/her qualifying run to move into the finals? By the sounds of it they don’t from what the update is guessing. Can anyone confirm this? Do riders have to cross the finish line in Qualifying even if they are auto seeded?

  54. I remember Crankworx last year. Sam was in the monster tent every day, he always came out of the monster truck laughing with someone.
    He seemed to sit on the couch having a laugh with the presenter. Only when the camera was turned on was the serious guy you see on the screen turned on. Personally I think he plays most people with his on camera actions.
    I hope Sam makes it to the start on Sunday. To many of the big boys are out this year already.

  57. I dislocated my shoulder and tore my rotator cuff 7 weeks ago, I’m out for the summer as a result. I feel for ya Sam. Shoulder injuries blow.

  58. The debate between the two camps of “anti-Sam” vs. “I-want-to-bum-Sam” is really funny. But I gotta side on the anti-Sam side, If I’m going to take sides at all. People from the “other side” claim that he is such a dull personality because he is a top athlete and has a lot of pressure on him, but that has never stopped Steve Peat, arguably the best DHer ever to have lived, from being one of the most colorful personalities in the sport. And then theres is the comment that he has done so much for the sport. Shaun Palmer probably had the most profound effect on our sport in the last two decades and he was the biggest party animal of them all (feel free to argue me on this point I WILL beat you down). Ok, sure, Sam is unbeatable when he is on, but I think that’s pretty much all he has. He doesn’t have flair, he looks like he’s got a carrot up his bum when he’s riding, and acts like it’s still there when he’s not, he’s completely inanimate, and I can think of at least 80 people I’d choose to hang with before him. Bring on the flaming, this is fun >:)

It was the same with Steve Smith when I tried to talk to him before a race(and the people I know who rode with MS Evil in Sospel say that he is very cool) – if you want to be in the right mindset you have to be focused. Its not being boring, simply doing what you have to do. A lot of the guys that seem boring at the races are cool ppl outside of them.

    Its not really about wanting to be Sam but judging someones personality on inteviews or by the fact that he didnt say hi too you is silly. Fix your low self esteem issues if that bothers you so much.

One of the funny guys seems to be Cedric, but he also is a bit of a clown. You are discussing dull guys here, they are on top because they can race, not because theyre “nice”.     They are all fantastic riders and none of them are boring… they all party after a win, they are all great guys. Sam is a superfast rider, his skills are well proven and he’s not boring… come on there are videos.. behind the scenes etc.
    Peaty is still a great party guy, and he still has the speed to rival the younger riders and Gee… just watch the atherton project, i dont think anyone would call him boring after seeing that ;p

  66. I know Sam well, party and ride with him and have known him for a long time. Sam is an animal to party with and goes off when his not over seas doing his job his employers pay him to do !
    He is very generous and gives his time to kids and people less fortunate !! I think its a bit rich for people to be making comments about someone they dont even know or have not met, he is also a bit shy until he gets to know someone and does not thrive in front of a camerae his a down to earth Aussie lad , pull you heads in jealous haters !!
