save woburn sands

Woburn Sands has been around for a long time, some of the best riders in the world have ridden and still ride there. It’s seen different groups come and go over the years and lately, with the help of a few dedicated locals, has been built back up to become one of the best spots in the UK, appearing in magazines, videos and forums far and wide. It’s currently home to some of the most promising young riders in the UK, most notably the Jones brothers, Matt and Jono, who were recently featured in the mag.

Unfortunately, it has been announced that the trails are to be flattened due to the lack of provision of funds for the new 20 year lease. At the moment there is still hope, so get on over to the FACEBOOK page and show your support. Matt and Jono Jones are doing the best they can, but if any of you have any contacts, ideas or fancy purchasing the lease for the next 20 years then get involved…

For those of you that haven’t been lucky enough to get over to the sands, check out these little gems courtesy of Simon Nieborak.

  1. This is sad news. One of the legendary dirt spots in the UK… Although I have never ridden there. and ride mainly DH, Woburn represents the heart and soul of dirt jumping in this country.

  2. Messy – What the photos and video don’t show is all the downhill shuttle runs that sit alongside the dirt jumps. There are so many lines, from fast packed roller coasters to drifty loamy lines. It’s immense!

  3. Man what a shame! I’ve been riding there since I was 14 and i’m 30 now! I’d like to do all I can to help as everyone I know who is into bikes I have told to visit the Sands and not one has a bad word to say about it.

Along with Wisley, this is one of the best spots in the UK without a doubt.

  4. I started riding at Woburn in the late 1980s as an XC rider, through the 90s, and then got back into riding Woburn in 2002 on the freeride movement

I built a whole bunch of freeride trails down there, including timber ladder, drops and stunts, and was part of the NW London crew that regularly went to Woburn on weekends and sessioned the biggest gaps, drops and stunts on the site, and met loads of awesome local riders including the DJ crew with Elliot (Dirt contributor – Dead Sailor column), Sam, Div and co…

here is my Woburn photo album:

Woburn is probably my favourite UK riding spot, as its got something for everyone, and has great terrain, and a great buzz…and easy to get to for riders in the South-East with great transport connections via road or railway

if anyone wins the Eurolottery this weekend, please throw some money at Woburn, and get the lease sorted ;)

    cheers

  5. Bout time this got on dirt. its very vital to southern England’s downhill and dirt jump scene that this place stays open for riding. Dan Bateson and Sam Anslow also need a mention as they have also put a hella lot of effort into that place!

  6. every facility that the UK loses is a “deathflow” for our riding scene

Woburn is under threat – as is Esher Shore in Surrey, for different reasons, but it we lose both, its a killer blow for bike riders who enjoy jumps, stunts and airtime

I’ve been involved in mountain biking, BMX, Skateboarding, Rollerblading..for years, and every time a facility has closed, its killed the “local” scene

if you make it too hard for locals to access suitable terrain, they quit…and this creates a viscious circle, where others quit

  7. I love you Rob Cole, you’re soooo dreamy

  8. “I love you Rob Cole, you’re soooo dreamy

well I love you too Elbry ;)

    lol…

  9. here we go again – These rumours have been kicking around for a few weeks now, alas again it seems they have fed there way onto Dirt now ….. have abated the idle gossip on singletrack forum as I have been in touch with Bedford estates directly and the Estate manager so if you all want to know the latest information from Bedfords estates then drop me a mail and i’ll forward you their responses – another point as a rider of the bike park DH / free ride and the trails for 25 years don’t give them any additional excuses to want to close the place ” pick up your shit and take it home or put it in the bin even you pot heads can manage that surely! ! ! ” mrspesh@gmail.com

  10. Don’t flattern Woburn, flattern some chavs instead! Such a good place, such a sad thing if it does get flatterned!!

  11. This is just another nail in the coffin for this shit hole cuntry. How do “they” expect all the kids not to grows up as fat little turds when they continuously make it as hard as possible to do exercise. Unless you playing footy of course.

Rob you are a bleedin legend mate, people like you keep the scene alive!

  12. well here is some more positive news, taken from Woburn Local “matt” and posted on SDH

Went down there today and spoke to the ranger. He said his company (Greensands?) and even MK and central bedforshire council are up for sorting the place out and getting some funding for the insurance, up keep, etc but its the landowner who isn’t on side. Ill be having words with the people I know at both councils but it seems its ultimately up so the land owner so we’ll see

    —-

Oh yea, the ranger said it wont be closed (if thats what happens) until August now, so best get down there while we can. Also, the ranger said one of the main reasons the place is (possibly) getting closed is litter. Greensands dont have the time, money or manpower to send staff up there to tidy it up to keep the land owner happy. So… take you fcuking litter home with you. You brought it there, so it stands to reason you can take it back. If I see anyone dropping stuff up there I will force feed it to you

  13. Woburn is open until at least the end of December… I spoke to the ranger last weekend and he issued me a permit until 31st December. He also said, “If I had to put money on it, I’d say it would stay open.” He also said, “If you’d have asked me a couple of weeks ago, I’d have put my money on it closing.” Read into that

I go there most days, and one thing that really pisses me off is kids standing on or around the jumps whilst their parents aimlessly wander around. That’s an accident waiting to happen that we could do without. Also, there is a bin down the bottom, near the dirt jumps. Please use it.
