Old School Downhilling
While I try and sort out my wonky computer here is a great retro downhill video to watch.
These guys certainly take some hard slams.
Props to nub from the Dirt comments for spotting this peach.

ABSOLUTELY BONKERS!!!!
Why did nobody think of running their seat post lower, god when i was a kid with a 20 inch framed emmellle corniche I never lifted my seat post once….. wow, stiff forks that were bent forward at the bottom for “extra stability across rough terrain”…hahahaaa those were the days!!
Total hilarity and massive props to anyone from that vid and/or era as some of those guys were pinned with a massive P ! amazing video!
Amazing! downhill at its best lol
Did they all have to drink a pint of vodka before they set off? Some serious committment on display!
lol brake fail for dude at 1.05
I wonder if in twenty years we will also laugh at how and what we ride today?
What will the changes be? Wider bottom brackets? Shorter cranks? Even longer Wheelbase?
The MTB dark ages, best forgotten me thinks.
I will take my Fox 32 Vanilla over my original Girven flex stem anyday, what were we thinking.
This is why I will not let purple things anywhere near my bike now as it brings back terrible memories.
Some serious gravel rash! Out comes the TCP. Makes you wonder if anyone made it down without crashing!
Well, our sport has evolved. Just watching this hurt.
Hilarious! They could have taken a few setup tips from 26″ BMX cruiser race bikes. I remember back in the eighties thinking about adapting a 26″ BMX cruiser and adding gears to use as an MTB.
literally crying with laughter! where to start? forgot there was so much neon lycra in early 90′s mountain biking!
Jeezuz, I posted the above before i’d got to 5:07 onwards. had to go and watch the rest in the office carpark on my phone as I literally couldn’t stop laughing. Got some weird looks here I can tell you. It’s like You’ve Been Framed on crack!
Good family day out for the spectators by the looks of it! Hundreds of ‘em…
I think every single person crashed hahaha. Watchin guys attack that staircase is hillarious.
Hey guys,
this video was taken in windischgarsten, austria! since 2004 they are organizing one of the best and hardest downhill races, UCI Cat 2, here in austria. Some british guys even raced there this year

One of the best. Full commitement by those guys 10/10
10/10 for commitment and style
It just goes to show how much mountain biking has coming on not only in the bikes but also the skills of the riders! Imagine what it’ll be like in another 20 years, we’ll all look back on the likes of sam hill and peaty and be laughing if this video is anything to go by!
the “bend your bike fairy” worked hard in those days
i to must have been a dedicated follower of fashion, why the hell did we run the seatpost at full height , proper funny though that
Thats some hardcore retro downhill right there.amazing to watch
2 things stick out:
Thank god for modern tyres
Thank god again for modern brakes!
Quality vid
HOLY SHITBALLS!!!
What’s the bike at around 5:55 ? Looks full sus with about an inch of travel
By looking at this and it’s sponsors and crowds back in the day, DH should be the biggest sport on the planet by now. Erm……
Duck, that looks like a GT RTS. Had about 2 inches if I remember correctly..
Yeah I had one but the forks looked a little weird on the vid. Back end looks right. What a pike of shit they were! Felt space age at the time though! Snapped mine. It’s probably still in the bushes at Hopton……
alot of anger was taken out on the bikes when things went wrong in those days!!
This is why rigid forks blows.
If ever there was a video to highlight the cons of long stems, this is it!
Brilliant
weapons, the lot of ‘em.
that is superb, total balls out!
I bet most of us keyboard warriors would not be as fast as them with a modern DH bike on that course.
the seats are hight beacause these races did have a lot of pedaling and most of them even had climbs.
not just the gear has changed but the format of mountain bike races.
most guys were doing XC and “gravity” races on the same setup.
fashion and fuction comments ?
-these are not helmets , they are hats
-these are not biking clothes , they are the basterd result of skiing skin suits copulating whit american football jersey.
-god , oh god ….why , why , why the neon colors ?
but none the less , us more than 35 year old dudes have been there , in neon , on rigid bikes , whit no brakes getting our ball$ crushed. It had to start somewhere sometime right ?
Good race footage here with a little interview with a young Peaty at the end. Super narrow bars too!

There was a lot of anger wasn’t there? These were clearly desperate men… maybe they wanted to get out of sight of the crowds as quickly as possible given the outfits!
Interesting that in the first half of the video, most of hte bike crashes result in bent wheels. Thank god for progress!
Imagine some of there dudes down Champery…
takes me back to the mega 2011, sadly this look is still prevalent with some of are euro friends, au revouir
Cheers guys!
Actually it was a mate of mine who spotted it. Anyway I was beginning to worry it’ll pass unnoticed, glad it didn’t
It looks a bit like someone picked some random guys, put some gear on them, put them on bikes and pushed them off a hill, doesn’t it? Out of control.
I would also like to emphasize how the second tune in that vid actually somehow fits all this, so funny…
I like the Peaty vid, but seriously, it’s a whole different story! These guys knew how to ride, no one has crashed… it’s not even funny
Think it would be good to see both of those vids with Warner’s commentary…:D
cant believe how easily all those wheels buckled
DH with bar ends? I remember those days, the only difference in bike set up between XC and DH was lowering your seat an inch!!
I want some polka dot riding shorts.
I guess I was years ahead of my time, I used to ride downhill in 1990 with my seatpost slammed down, wearing baggies and a Pro-tec skate helmet.
Ahh…been there,done that!
My first DH race was just like this, licra, rigid everything, cantilevers! People had big fun all the same, believe me
It’s like U-brake heaven…….ask your dad.
Im so glad we have proper suspension technology now… This is just downright dangerous!
camel toes galore !
and we thought we were so cool!
ahhhh the olden days.
.
Just remember, with out them you wouldnt have what you ride now, and as others have said, in 20 years time a M9/Demo/Glory etc etc with coil springs will be like a massive joke. The past is the past, the future of downhill is anyones guess.
Hilarious watching them rage on their bikes hahahaha
