A video look at the Sram X0 DH groupset
After two years in development Sram X0 DH groupset was recently launched at a press camp in Les Gets, France.
Vic Lucas has put together this edit which includes Sram riders, Steve Peat, Greg Minnaar, Sam Hill and Brendan Fairclough.

I’m sorry but what a load of marketing BS. Jacy going on about X0 but then not even mentioning how all his guys are running 6 speed!
Indeed Tom – 10 speed for my trail bike is awesome… one of the best “new things” for mtb ( along with uppy downey seatposts), but 10 speed for my DH bike?!
I’d gladly welcome a 6 gear set-up for the DH bike, but 10 speed seems pointless?
Can someone a bit more knowledgeable than me explain really why 10 speed for DH is “needed” ?
10 speed for DH is for people that don’t have their own personal mechanics. The pros don’t use the same 6 gears for each course. Each track as specific requirements and the gear setup will be configured to suit. So having 10 available means you have most tracks and conditions covered.
isn’t it just the road gears anyway? i mean what is the lowest gear combo/ratio you would possibly run at their level? 10sp DH is for people who what? don’t get to shuttle up?
what flavor is that kool-aid, dave?
I think the important thing to remember is that its an XO DH system which is now optimised for the low ratio gears. Whether you want to run it 10 speed like Peat and Minaar or 6 with Fairclough and Hill… does that matter really?
Funny though that HB seemed to sell the riding more than his product.
since you only need 6 gears it would make more sense to build it for 6 gears only. shave a little weight and make it more compact and durable, sram put so much into the blackbox program and for development you’d think they could build a good drivetrain
10 speed chains scare the shit out of me, too narrow, best on road bikes where they belong, give me strength anyday
It’s the same every time we jump up another gear… 8spd!!! What’s wrong with 7spd… we get used to it, gasp 9spd!!!!! What’s wrong with 8spd! I’m sure like suspension travel, it will level out. Maybe they’ll ‘Monster T’ it (13 speed) then reign it back in to 8spd. Or we’ll all have gearboxes and flux capacitors.
tnt: then probably 9 speed chains should scare you more. All chains do not break at the link, they break at the pin. The pin of a 10 speed chain is shorter (for the chain being narrower) than one on a 9 speed chain, so actually your chain is stronger.
still not convinced, each to there own, im happy with 9 anyway, 10 speed if you can afford it i guess
I run single speed and im faster than any of you nerds. my downhill bike is actually fixed gear and I NEVER wear a helmet. Helmets are for pussys and people who run 10 speed. SRAM? more like SRAMGAYYY!
i like how the whole angle of the video was ‘i was running the new X0 gear and it allowed me to win the world _________’. what bullsh@t. the only reason you need a 10 cog spread is for cadence, and cadence only really matters for roadies. whatever.
wow. That was a lot of marketing bs in a short time. It was actually embarrassing to watch at times.
It did have a “read this cue card” written by the marketing dept feel, didn’t it?
tnt – think of the horsepower that roadie sprinters put through a 10 spd chain. DHers or even 4X riders don’t go anywhere near that I’d think. Those guys break frames and chainring bolts in sprints FFS!
good point, but 10s not for me
Roadies have had 11spd now for ages…
Romur has it Shimano have a patented 14spd design…..And have done for a while. Agreed 10spd is overkill on a DH bike. Efforts would be better focused on smaller cog/driver set ups for DH, allowing smaller front rings, like the set up on the spesh team bikes.
So what they’re basically saying is that all these iders only win because they have sram xo? I guess if thats the case they’re saying everyone should go out and buy shimano xtr as Gwins smoked everyone this year and like Sram says it’s the drivetrain that makes all the difference! what a load of shit!
I think it’s insulting that Sram think people are that stupid they can’t see through such terrible marketing BS. Somebody in there marketing department needs sacking for this it was awfull.
If you compete then this is a very good piece of footage, 10 speed is faster and better! But if you ride to have a blast and still compete, but with mates then maybe its not worth spending the dosh. The pros are split seconds from each other and the 10 speed helps them but most of us don’t give a dam, just ride to get loose. The guys in this vid are not lying but its not aimed at the average rider, no way, just the pro’s.
Down thumb selectors… peace.
The more gears you have the closer they all have to be together to fit and the more precise and accurate your derailleur has to be. If the derailleur is anything but perfectly alined you will have way more shifting issues than 9 speed. Is this what we want? I know I dont.
This new 10 speed stuff may be good for other forms of riding but i dont think its suited to the abuse that dh bikes go through.
