A dream in white for Sam Reynolds

Leogang, Salzburger Land (AUT), January 27^th 2012 – The Monster Energy White Style presented by Kona has a new winner: British rider Sam Reynolds placed himself in the centre of the podium. After a spectacular final run in winter conditions the young Monster Energy rider takes home the victory from the sixth White Style. Swedish Martin Söderström can celebrate his second place and AntoineBizet from France took third place. The later was without a doubt the surprise talent of the contest and swept the jury off their feet with his first final run.

During the finals that took place under floodlights as usual, about 2.500 spectators followed the action with baited breath. Rightafter the live act “The NIHILS”, the atmosphere was perfect and the crowd ready for some serious mountain biking action. The riders were not about to let them down and made sure to deliver a great show.

The winner Sam Reynolds topped off his near perfect first run with a true Monster Energy White Style masterpiece: he started out with a three table at the step down out of the igloo at the start, then a backflip nohand, followed by a tailwhip at the next step down, then he flipped onto the massive “Monster Ship” and flipped off the 7 meter drop. Then the unexpected went down: Sam nailed a perfect double backflip which was the first double backflip landed ever at the White Style contest!

Sam was absolutely stoked, winning the first comp of 2012: “Unbelievable, I just dropped in and took my ride and then I thought, ok let’s kick the double back! When I landed I already knew it was enough for some of the first places. But to leave Leogang as winner is quite a little winter dream for me”, commented the newly crowned king of the Monster Energy White Style on his triumph.

Even if it wasn’t enough for a spot on top of the podium, French rider Antoine Bizet also definitely deserves a mention, especially because of his bad luck last year when he broke his collar bone; with a daring crazy first run, including flatspins, flip nohands, flip drops and more  he was leading the competition for a long time. But then he was also displaced to third place by the Swedish giant Martin Söderström with the most technical run of the day. Martin was throwing down one banger trick after the other with a 360-tailwhip out of the igloo, followed by a flip-whip, then a nollie to bar spin, flip up the Monster Ship, 360 off the big drop and finished with a perfectly executed double tailwhip.

In the afternoon, the invited riders had already shown what the finals would have in store on the course built by Kona rider Grant“Chopper” Fielder by the Schanteilift in Leogang. In perfect snow conditions, Chopper definitely didn’t scrimp on airtime: Over two tons of snow – his building material of choice – left enough room for an extra massive step down the overall 18 riders used for some gigantic tricks. For example, during qualifying, winner of the last two years Sam Pilgrim from Great Britain made it abundantly clear that he is on top of his game and was ready to complete his White Style hat-trick. Unfortunately he crashed at the first obstacle in his second final run, and was out of the fight the podium places.

Crashing a car, getting naked at the trails then being harpooned in the ear by a sprig of Beech is a normal day at the office for Sam Reynolds!

(I was actually going to become a tree surgeon but I couldn’t stand the sight of sap)

We were going to film M.O.D Teamrider Sam Reynolds practice the double frontflip and maybe bring it to dirt in “bella Italia” Belluno at the CMYK M.O.D compound to be exact. We called up the guys from filmerforce to capture the moment and alex boyce to take some sick shots.Sam flew in from London , Georgie and Barta drove from Vienna. The CMYK crew in belluno had everything proper prepared for us, good dinners, sick shoes, a great apartment to stay in, run up plates , ambulance , a motorbike for the toe in,mechanics , drivers ….. everything you need for a sick shooting on a exceptional spot.The first day we went to foampit practice in Alvaro dal Farras massive foampit. Sam busted out some double frontflips who were working perfect ad first but after a few successful attempts it just would not work anymore so we decided to leave the double frontflip attempt to dirt because this is just not a trick to take risk on . If you go down you will go down hard. Anyhow Sam continued the practice into the foampit and busted out some really sick tricks such as no handed frontflips,superman seatgrab onehands , indyflips,flipwhips and many more.

The next day we went to the dirtspot (doublewitch is about 20 minutes from the foampit just next to a big construction site with all kind of mashines who helped us to build the perfect landing.Massimo Bianconcini and Miky Monti joined in for a session.Everone was pumped and ready to go.Sam and Tomas started hitting a fmx ramp set on 13 meters, Alvaro was giving sam speed by toeing him in on his bike. Sam showed some big tricks such as frontflips , backflips, massive seatgrabs and also a big premier a Supermanseatgrab one hand what is totally rad and barley has been done before.

After seasoning the big motojump for a few hours we discovered the massive FMX quaterpipe that altar had as his place so Sam decided to get a toe in on that one swell and did some massive 7 meter high inverts and the shots turned out to be amazing.

Sam who rides for DMR, SRAM and Fox Racing says:

“This is my second attempt, first go I over rotated and did two and a half!
The foampit is at Danny Torres’ place in the South of Spain…might take it to dirt when I find a jump big enough! ”

Sam Reynolds… Well known dirt jumper from the United Kingdom who rides for DMR. He has proven his mad skills winning ‘King of Dirt’ twice in a row. I have met with Sam, earlier this year and shot a few photos. Take a look and read what he has to say about KoD, his daily life, plans and dirt jumping scene…

Greetings your majesty, King Reynolds… I think, I can call you this after two wins in a row at the “King of Dirt” contests… How does it feel to triumph over other rivals? From what I know this competition really boosted up your career?

Yeah it was the first comp I ever did and won the pro category first time! I was on a frame deal with DMR at the time, but after I won they promoted me to full team!

Yes, so we can say that KoD has been lucky for you. Now, after 2 years of being a professional rider for DMR, tell us all how it came about?

I met Mike Smith (former DMR rider) up at my local trails one day and he invited me to an article for a UK bike mag, basically it was unknown riders vs pro riders and I ended up winning! Then DMR hooked me up with a Transition frame, then as I said, I won a pro round of King of Dirt in 2008. 2 Years later I’m still super happy with everything and hope to ride for them for many years to come!

What are the best advantages of being sponsored besides getting all the bike parts for free? It’s not all about the free stuff, I know that you are currently testing a brand new frame – “dmr 898″. Tell us about that.

I work real closely with the guys at DMR, most of the new products are all developed with input from us team riders. The new 898 frame is a good example, it’s everything we wanted in a bike: super light, super strong and a super short rear end!

What’s your daily routine like? Do you have any special schedule for training or is it pretty random sessions with buddies? How and where do you learn new tricks – do you use foam pit?

8.30- Wake up, get some breakfast, usually toast but sometimes bacon and sausages, then drive over to the compound. After a big facebook session with Olly Wilkins and Brendan Fairclough, we usually hit the pump track for a few hours. Lunch is usually at the local sandwich shop, ‘cos a fit girl works there, then we play micro scooter on the drive. After scootering, we drink a Monster then get to work on building at the pump track or riding the trick jump. Many stunts later, we usually go on a road ride or listen to a drum and bass CD and make the pump track better. There are plans to make a jacuzzi and sauna too. And as for foam pits, I don’t really ride them often, I think people rely too much on them. Don’t get me wrong, they’re good for tricks, but you need to ride jumps to improve your riding, not just learn tricks! Too many riders these days can barely ride the jumps but can flip whip the last set. Not cool guys!

Who is your idol in the bike world? Do you like to derive influence from watching the movies and photos of other famous riders?

I like watching Olly Wilkins and Jimmy Pratt, they’re the most flowy riders in the world. Anyone having fun on a bike is good to watch, unless they can’t do the jumps, but still try and flip whip!

The English (UK) have a pretty strong group of dirt jumpers [Pilgrim, Pace, Pratt, Samson brothers, just to name a few]. Who do you see as the biggest rival?

Sam Pilgrim is obviously the man to beat right now! Probably one of the best comp riders in the world right now.

You beat him at Donington dirt jumping contest…What are your bigger plans for the next season? Maybe Crankworx Slopestyle event in Whistler, BC, Canada?

Who cares, I’m gunna ride and have fun! I want to win pump track national champs though.

You’re jumping huge jumps, doing massive whips, flips and many other crazy tricks… Do you ever feel fear?

Nah…

Fair enough… But glory is only one part of a dirt jumper’s life, the brighter side… Let’s talk about this more darker side… Pain and injuries? Would you like to brag in front of us the list of your biggest bails, crashes and broken bones?

Dislocated my collar bone 360ing a bigggg jump [note: Big in Bavaria event]. All the rest are cuts and bruises…

Lucky you! Keep it that way! What is your the most fav’d trail here in the UK? Also, where would you like to come back or visit some time in the future?

Compound is the best, Wisely are good too and Redhill 4x track is mint. Hafjell in Norway is my favorite riding place in the world right now, hopefully I’ll go back next year!

Damn, Hafjell is a dream place… Anything that you would like to shout out to all the dudes out there?

Buy a DMR and don’t ride too much foam pit!
